Response to Identity video

Identity crisis- what do we call ourselves?

Involved in the evolution of the Internet we borrowed from software for user experience and usability. We headed towards a mature successful specialized industry. He stresses that there is value in assessing where we are and where we have been. Evolution of specialization- need to create hybridity. He notes different career paths, web design path- design aesthetics, web developer path-programs no interest in aesthetics, print design- start in production work (how design gets made- strengths and limitations of media), industrial design- more sever knowledge of looks and function (design and engineer elegantly). Paths may be separate but the impact is inevitable. Design and build are integrated- especially in web- code is object. Designbuild

Designer or developer- our identity?

Job titles what we call ourselves is external/ not internal but they are how we communicate what we do in the world, so they are important. Needed for other job opportunities.

Now and days people come out with job titles already formed rather than in the past where people had to try many things. Creating a template for what we are to become and this may have these separated specialization rather than in the past being hybrid.

We only see this hybridity in architecture now. Design/build what happens is you uncover efficiency and problem solving ON SITE and u know how they work because you’re involved

Hybrid survival tips

Big teams- hard to cross over

Learn to talk about what you do not what your job is

What are you good at- don’t be vague there may be a risk in devoting yourself to one thing- sell to them why you bring more to the table

Find your leverage-earn respect- skeptical of designer writing code- design can come thru in the coding process- designers over simplify-engineers-over complicate

Small team-

Don’t do everything at once- every decision is yours- easy to get over whelmed

Developer to developer; design to design

Design something your not sure how to build-freedom to push yourself- to learn

Stay open to new ideas- don’t put up wall to things that don’t fit the system

Shelve ideas for later

Identity- tune ourselves amplify native web strengths/integrate design/photo, design/ content, design/ code
